Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) – Building the Future of Energy Storage Manufacturing

The Sunlight Xanthi Transformation Project is a strategic investment initiative aimed at establishing Sunlight Group's production facility in Xanthi, Greece, as one of the world's largest and most advanced industrial energy storage battery manufacturing sites. With a total investment budget of €175 million and financing of €52.6 million from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), the project supports the expansion, modernisation, and digital transformation of the company's industrial operations while strengthening Europe's battery manufacturing ecosystem.

The investment encompasses a comprehensive set of actions designed to increase production capacity, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate the adoption of sustainable manufacturing practices. Key elements include the expansion of lead-acid battery cell production, the automation and scaling of lithium battery assembly lines, the construction of a new 17,000 m² logistics centre, and the deployment of advanced Industry 4.0 technologies across the plant. The project also incorporates renewable energy solutions and digital applications that support Sunlight's transition towards a greener, smarter, and more resilient industrial future.

The proposed project:

  • expands battery production capacity through new manufacturing infrastructure and automated production lines

  • accelerates digital transformation by integrating Industry 4.0 technologies and smart factory applications

  • supports the green transition through renewable energy integration, improved resource efficiency, and sustainable industrial practices.
